1890-1899

1890
- The US signs a treaty of alliance with the Japanese Empire. In return for letting the American Navy to be based in Japan, the US provides Japan with capital and technology. A controversial measure of the treaty provides unrestricted immigration between the two nations.
- Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky, which have 60% of Confederate industry, call a convention for an Emancipation Amendment. Virginia threatens to secede forces passage with all states but Alabama and Mississippi agreeing. Slavery is outlawed in the CSA on December 31, 1890.
- However, slavery continues under other guises for decades to come.
- US government declares the Western frontier closed.
- 19th Amendment
to the US consitution ratified. It gives the Federal Government the right to levy an income tax.
1891
- US lifts embargo of the Confederate States. Trade florishes. British lift their embargo later.
- The Reform Party is formed in the Confederacy, its platform calls for amending the constitution to allow more people to vote. Former Federalists form the Centrist Party, calling for constitutional amendments to become more like the USA. Conservative Party calls for a return to the old ways. The Common Sense Party platform calls for encouraging states to move toward industrialization.
- Common Sense nominee Robert Freeman is elected President in the House of Representatives. Neither of the four parties obtain a majority in either house of Congress.
1892
- In his last act as President, George Washington Lee dedicates Arlington National Cemetery. Confederate figures such as Jackson and Longstreet are later buried there.
- Custer declines to run for a fourth term, Republican Levi P. Morton elected President of the USA. Republicans gain majority in Senate and House.
- Russia offers to sell Alaska to Britain, they turn down the price as being too high, thinking the Russians would have to back down. Much to Britain's chagrin the US pays Russia's price and gains title to Alaska.
- Lower California Territory is admitted to the Union, becoming the last mainland territory to become a state.
1892-1896
- Immigration swells US population, including people from Texas and CSA. Provisions in the Japanese-American alliance allow millions of Asians to enter the United States. African-American population encouraged to move to Liberia, Native Americans to Sequoyah. US Industrial Growth continues.
- Confederate economy recovers, with cheap labor and no tariffs US moves factories south--especially Virginia--cities such as Alexandria and Norfolk grow from manufacturing and trade.
- Cattle comes to dominate Texas goods. Texas begins to straify between an English-speaking ruling class and a Spanish-speaking servent class. Texas activily deports blacks to Liberia.
- Naval building race between the United States, United Kingdom and Germany continues.
1893
- Confederate Navy contracts Norfolk to American builders in return for four battleships. CSA moves main naval facility to Cape Canaveral, Florida.
- An American Fleet enroute to Stika is blocked by a Squadron of the Royal Navy. Philadephia files a formal protest with Brtiain.
- The Royal Navy opens its first shipyard outside of Great Brtain, in Halifax.
1894
- Third French Republic is overturned by a Communist revolution.
- Georgia forces freemen to leave the state. Many flee to Liberia but many stay behind in defiance. Race Riots burn Atlanta and Savannah.
- Panhandle War
, is fought between Texas and Sequoyah over the Sequoyah panhandle. Texan forces push north but American demonstrations in Colorado and Kansas convince Texans to retreat. There are no declarations of war or any peace treaty.
- With most of the US Army spread about the American Empire the US activates reserves and puts them on ready stand-by for action.
- The US and Mexico sign and ratify the Treaty of San Diego. The US formally receives title to the Yucatan. In return, the US pledges to declare war on the CSA or Texas should they attack Mexico.
- New Populist Party is formed in the US with its powerbase in the midwest. It wins twelve seats in the congressional elections; the democrats achive a bare plurality as Radical and Republican canidates steal votes from each other.
- Despite the enormous expense the US Navy begins to equip their warships with wireless sets. The British Admirality dismisses it as a "toy."
1895
- Americans seize Terra del Fuego as a naval base, European governments protest but do not act.
- From bases in the Yucatan the US Army seizes Nicaragua after negotations for a canal collapse. Canal construction begins before the year's end. Britain, CSA, Germany and France all file a former protest.
- Sino-Japanese War
is fought between Japan and China. Japan wins wholesale and gains complete control of China and Formosa (Taiwan). The Russians protest a move against Japan controlling Manchuria. The Japanese effort is greaty helped by the Americans.
1896
- The election is thrown into the House of Representatives. War hero of the French-American War, Theodore Roosevelt is elected with a joint Radical-Republican nomination.
- 20th Amendment
is ratified in USA, declared English the official language and gives Congress power to enforce usage of English.
1897
- French Communists move to into Belgium. Germany, Britain and Russia meet to discuss action. Britain, tied up with America, is reluctant to act. Russia, however, offers to back Germany should Communism spread again. France also establishes a bioresearch center.
- Common Scene and Centrists form Fusion party in CSA and elect Matthew Richardson.
- The World War begins between the United States and United Kingdom.
1898
- Belgian Communist State is declared. Germany seizes the Belgian Congo - the French are in no position to react and the US & UK are too tied up with each other.
- The Netherlands and Luxomberg sign an alliance with Germany if they are invaded with France or Belgium.
- The World War expands to include several nations.
- Westminster agrees to give Austraila dominion status at the end of the war.
1899
- Germany economy blossoms as it sells arms to warring parties, mostly to the British and Russians since American merchants do not tempt the Royal Navy. However orders come in for arms all over Europe from the war.
- A Communist rebellion starts and is repressed in Spain. French aid is cancelled after Germany threatens war should France intervene.
