Dixie-4
A better supplied and funded Confederacy managed to win serious victories
in the North during Lee's 1864 offensive, bringing recognition for the
South and a separation from the North. Relations between the US and the
CSA dominated North American politics, especially since westward expansion
by the US cut off the western provinces from British Canada in retaliation
for British aid to the Confederacy.
Many of the Western states like Fremont and Shoshone have black majorities, as emancipated blacks were encouraged to go west and vote Republican during the immediately post-war administrations. This has led to a much more multiracial US political mindset throughout history.
The CSA likewise took the opportunity to annex Mexico and now stretches southward to the Nicaragua canal. However, racism, and even chattel slavery, are still common social practices throughout the South.
World War I was fought with the US taking Germany's side and the South taking the side of its old allies the English and French. Though General George Patton of the South defeated the North brilliantly on the battlefield, as the situation in Europe deteriorated for England and France, the CSA began to fall behind. German gold poured into the North and a teetering victory was achieved.
Since WWI ended with a German victory, the National Socialist party never got off the ground and Germany remains a constitutional monarchy to this day. World War II began when France, thirsting for revenge, poured its troops over the border into Germany with lightning speed (germane-eclair, they called it, "lightning war"). Germany called on its old allies the US for aid, who were only too glad to help out, particularly when Japan launched a surprise attack on Confederacy ports in Hawaii and Central America. The Confederacy managed to win a scorched-earth battle in the Pacific even after the betrayal and flight of the British, though Russia managed not to fall within the German orbit after the Allies collapsed when the Germans exploded an A-bomb on Elbe. The CSA exploded its own bomb only a year later.
Now (local year 1991) the US and the CSA are at the forefront of a
world Cold War, with Soviet Russia a marginalized third power.
The Confederacy purchased the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua in 1881, then started a war against Mexico in 1900 to conquer the whole country - now the CSA stretches all the way to Nicaragua.
Black refugees came Northwards in waves - having nowhere else to go, many went West, building a powerful poltiical bloc in the Mid and Far West. The first Black President of the USA, Vernon W. Slesinger, a former governor of Dakota, has just been elected. American Indians also have increased political clout, though they are more likely to be poor than black or white Yankees.
Also because of the influx of African-Americans, the music scene of Detroit and Chicago has also shifted westward to Kansas and Iowa. Most great rock-and-rollers have roots there.
Since Germany and the Union won World War One, there was no Nazi party and no Holocaust - there was also no reduction in colonial control over the Third World. German Indochina is the location of one of the worst, most muddled conflicts in the world.
Europe came out of both wars hurt, but relatively unscathed if you compare it to the suffering of Homeline Europe during the same period. The fear now is of the nuclear stalemate being reached between the sides.
