Why OZ is OZ and Treize is Treize

A hypothesis...

Note:

1.    This is only a hypothesis and does not in any way claim to be the "truth".

2.    [alphabet] is the numerical value of the given alphabet - e.g. [A]=1, [B]=2, [C]=3

So what names shall they come up with for the man and his organization? Of course, it would be a bonus if they could derive these names from numerals like they did for the five Gundam pilots (and indeed, most of the other characters in the series). But all they have for the moment is a beautifully crafted surname for the man: Khushrenada.

So what about deriving those numerals from the initial letter of that surname? As it turns out, there are two possibilities: K, or X {the Greek alphabet equivalent of "Kh"). From these two initials, they can derive the following numbers:

a.    [K] = 11

b.    [X] = 24

c.    [X] + [K] = 35

d.    [X] - [K] = 13

e.    [X] x [K] = 264

Obviously, 24, 35 and 264 would be too large and therefore too cumbersome to be used (Think of vingt-et-quatre, for instance, or trent-et-cinq). So they are left with 11 and 13, the French equivalents of which are onze and treize accordingly. Treize seems more elegant and therefore more fitting for the man, so there they have it - Treize Khushrenada.

That leaves onze for the man's organization, but even with four letters, it still looks rather clunky. So they decide to represent it with its most prominent vowel and consonant - OZ.

There are other reasons for this choice as well:

a.    [Z] - [O] = 11

b.    Pictorially, "OZ" looks most like "02". And:

        i.        11 + 02 = 13.

Incidentally, in this connection, we might note the following:

ii.       If you move the letters of "OZ" two steps forward, you get "QB", the initials of Quinze and Barton, the two masterminds of Operation Meteor.

iii.      If you move the letters of "OZ" two steps backwards, you get "MX", the initials of Mariemaia Khushrenada, daughter of Treize.

And of course, it shares the same name as L. Frank Baum's fantasy land, giving them an opportunity to name another two persons after "The Wizard of Oz" characters. We have Dorothy, for instance (although she looks more like the Wicked Witch of the West), and what else is Otto but an anagram of "Toto"...

Ever since my hypothesis came out in April 2000, I have received further information on OZ. Here are some of them:

Objective (or Operation etc) : Zenith

Source: a Gundam Wing promotional pamphlet included as a premium with a 1996 issue of Animedia (or Animage?) magazine.

Unfortunately, I am unable to quote the pamphlet as I do not have it.

Many thanks to Sumire  for her help.

Organization (or Order etc) of the Zodiac

Source: ???

Many thanks to Amber and the other readers who have pointed out the fact to me.
